JOAN FALLON ~ Historical novelist & crime writer

What makes an author?

Write about what you know” is advice often given to aspiring authors. Good advice but sometimes we must cut loose and let our imaginations take over.

“One of the joys of writing fiction is that the writer can create their own world, with characters that do not actually exist, but whom the reader will recognise and empathise with anyway.”

I write historical and contemporary fiction and I soon learnt that whether the characters are in the 10th century or the twenty-first century, basically people do not change. They face the same challenges they always have. They love, they quarrel, they despair, they have ambitions, they commit crimes, they hope for better times.

On the whole, writers are eclectic people who use a mix of their personal experiences and creative skills to enhance what they are writing and bring their readers into their world to share it with them.
